WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar has shared in a recent interview that in 2021, HBO and HBO Max achieved a combined total of 73.8 million global subscribers. Kilar told Deadline that company projections for the end of 2021 placed the subscriber count for 73 million.
“[2021 was] the year that HBO Max broke through,” said Kilar.
The executive also said that later this month, AT&T will share figures on how these subscriber numbers break down between the United States and other territories. Internationally, HBO Max has still yet to roll out in the UK, Italy, and Germany. Those territories have a current distribution deal with Sky, which will run through 2024–at which point, WarnerMedia is expected to negotiate. As Kilar says, “We’re always talking with our partners.”
The streaming service has enjoyed a boost from day-and-date film releases from Warner Bros. Recent examples include Dune and Matrix Resurrections. The platform will also premiere Peacemaker with three new episodes on January 13.
Last year may have been a breakthrough one for HBO Max, but even the platform’s biggest fans would admit its app still needs a lot of work. According to comments from an unnamed WarnerMedia exec that were shared in August 2021, they are well aware of the app’s unpredictable instability, and are going to address those issues. No timeline has been disclosed, but “early 2022” is when to expect an improved viewing experience.
